The rate of education in Guatemala is among the lowest in the entire Latin region. Some of the problems include late enrollment, grade repetition and dropout rates. While the education system and rate has increased dramatically throughout the years, especially in the last twenty years, only about 70% of children complete their primary education (Avivara 2). There are also various portions of people that are extremely low in education, these are mostly the indigenous people. The indigenous people of Guatemala, Mayans, have 2.5 years of schooling while non-indigenous people have 5.7 years (Avivara 1). In the following paragraphs I will be talking about the Mayan girls’ education, the Guatemalan population in general, and various ways Guatemala can improve their education rates.
Mayan girls’ are by far the lowest educated and in my opinion the most unlucky group of all the people in Guatemala. They are not educated as much, good and are actually looked down upon sometimes if they do become educated. “Despite the rising proportion of Mayan females who are participating in the educational system, dropout among young Guatemalan’s is common, particularly at age 12; dropout at this age is especially frequent among Mayan females” (Avivara 1). In Guatemala women are usually homemakers while the males are the bread winners. Being a homemaker does not require much schooling, learning will mostly occur at home from their mothers. They will learn how to do the daily duties and take care of the other children. “Only 39 percent of 15–64-year-old Mayan women in Guatemala are literate (versus 68, 77, and 87 percent of Mayan males, Ladina females, and Ladino males, respectively)” (Avivara 1).
The Guatemalan population is the lowest educated in all of the Latin region. “…only 60 percent of Mayan males and 40 percent of Mayan females are still in school by age 14” (Avivara 1). One of the main reasons so many children are not enrolled in school is because of the household income. It costs a lot of money to go to school even here in America, with the widespread poverty in Guatemala it can be nearly impossible to become educated or educate your children! Another reason for low rates of education is the lack of interest, especially with the Mayan. Becoming educated is not really a top priority for a lot of Guatemalans. With this being said things desperately need to change as far as education in Guatemala.
There are many ways that Guatemala can offer better and more education in general for its’ population. For one the government could offer more scholarships and grants for the rural regions and build more schools. There needs to be an education initiative done by the Guatemalan government for anything major to happen in the education system. While the rates have increased dramatically, it is still very low and the lowest among the Latin countries. Education needs to be a top priority for everyone in Guatemala, including the rural regions. Education also needs to become more popular and prominent.

1. Record:
Oil Production: 14.97
Oil Consumption: 80
2. Summarize: Write a short paragraph explaining the information you discovered and conclusions you can draw. How does this information help you develop a sense of place for the country -- living conditions, social development, use of land or other resources, etc.?
I have found that Guatemala uses a lot more oil than they produce! Guatemalans as a whole use 5.3 times as much oil as they produce. They are way worse than the United States! The United States produces 22,902 and consumes 24,477. I think that the living conditions are awful, social development is awful and the use of land and other resources is not being managed properly. I am sure they have oil in the country and that they can be using it better.
3. Contemplate:
What questions does the information raise in your mind. Write down two questions you have based on what you have discovered.
If most of the country is poor, how are they using so much oil?
Why are they using 5.3 times as much oil as they produce?!

Sugar, corn, bananas, coffee and beans will be produced with Guatemala's resources.
These goods will be produced by the local farmers that live there.
Everyone will use these goods, in the country and other countries. These goods will be exported to near by countries such as the United States.
I believe that Guatemala primarily has a command economic system because their poverty rates are high, use of resources being unequal and the labor distribution. More than half of the population is in poverty and 20% of the population that are the richest consume over half of the goods. Basically the rich population take up all of the goods and most of the population gets nothing. Guatemala is the most populated country in Central America but it ranges about the same to other countries in this area as far as its' economic stance.
GDP per capita: $5,300 157 in world
This basically shows how poor Guatemala is. In an entire year they could only make $5.300 in final goods! The United States GDP per capita is $52,800. Guatemala's per capita is about 9-10% of the U.S. With this being said you can see that the quality of living in Guatemala is very poor and not very equal.
